![]() About the Author: Caroline Bunker Rosdahl, RN-C, BSN, MA Caroline Bunker Rosdahl was born in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. To fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a nurse, she began her career as a Nursing Assistant as a teenager in a small town, 50-bed hospital. Ms. Rosdahl holds an Associate in Liberal Arts Degree and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Her graduate work includes a Master of Arts Degree in Psychology and Education and completion of course work for a PhD in Education. Ms. Rosdahl's nursing career spans several decades and includes experience as a Staff Nurse, Public Health Nurse, Home Care Nurse, and School Nurse/Counselor. She has taught at all levels of nursing, including Nursing Assistant, Practical Nursing, 2-year and 3-year RN Programs, and the Baccalaureate nursing program at the University of Minnesota. For 23 years, Caroline Rosdahl was Vice-President of Anoka-Hennepin Technical College, with administrative responsibility for the Practical Nursing program as well as other health-related programs at the college. She also has been a member of the Vocational-Technical Education faculty at the University of Minnesota, instructing vocational teachers how to teach, as well as supervising student teacher interns from St. Cloud State University. In addition, Ms. Rosdahl has received a number of honors, including a National Educational and Professional Development Fellowship at the University of Minnesota and Minnesota's Outstanding Vocational Teacher of the Year. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the American Nurses' Association, and the Delta Kappa Gamma society for women in education. Ms. Rosdahl wrote the original Practical Nursing Program at Anoka-Hennepin Technical College and served as its first Director. A new innovation of this program was the identification of behavioral objectives for students, which have since become universal in all nursing textbooks, including her own, Textbook of Basic Nursing. In addition to a number of other publications, Ms. Rosdahl has written and revised this classic nursing textbook, now in its 8th Edition. Caroline Rosdahl has a variety of additional occupational experience as well. She was Executive Director of the Minnesota Lions' Eye Bank, adding to her knowledge of organ and tissue donation. She served on a number of national and local committees, including the National Health Council's Committee on High School Health Occupations Education and the American Vocational Association's Scholarship Committee. She has been a National League for Nursing site visitor for Practical Nursing program accreditation and serves as a reviewer of continuing education courses for Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. For the past decade, Ms. Rosdahl has been employed as a staff nurse at Hennepin County Medical Center, Minnesota's Level I Trauma Hospital. She carries a National Certification in Psychiatry-Mental Health from the American Nurses' Credentialing Center. She is married and has one son, two granddaughters, and three stepchildren. She is active in two bands, primarily playing tenor saxophone. She makes her home in Minnesota and Arkansas. Mary T. Kowalski, RN, MSN Nursing has been my commitment and passion for 30 years. I started my nursing career working as a nurse's aide while attending nursing school. In the early phases of clinical practice, I knew that life as a nurse would be a never-ending learning process. The years employed in numerous aspects of the nursing field would later become an integral part of teaching students. Medical, surgical, orthopedic, pediatric, and geriatric units provided broad bases of experiences. Critical care knowledge greatly expanded during my years in nursing, and I was able to grow in depth and learn an appreciation for the concerns of the client, the nurse, and the physician. Many years in emergency departments and intensive care units provided me with multitudes of bedside stories that would be shared with future nurses. Teaching nursing students was an opportunity to share accumulated knowledge. For the last 20 years, I have been teaching theory and clinical aspects of nursing to student vocational/practical nurses. During these teaching years, students have shown me that they can change their own lives as well as the lives of their families and their clients. Nursing is a career that has rippling, cumulative effect that will continue into your students' futures, well beyond their brief moments as students of nursing.
